Lift High the Cross
Centrally and prominently located in the sanctuary of Rollingwood Lutheran Church is this ornate crucifix depicting Christ crucified. In the foreground of a deep crimson veil and high above the altar, the Gospel is ever before the eyes of those who worship below; for visually is retold what St. Paul states in Holy Writ: "God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, not counting their trespasses against them...[for] He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Cor. 5:19,21). And again, the prophet Isaiah foretold of the Christ: "He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed" (Is. 53:5). These wounds are vividly depicted in the near 2/3 scale European, hand-crafted corpus.
"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life."
- John 3:14-15
